Aortic sclerosis, illustration
Aortic sclerosis, illustration. The ascending aorta shows fibrotic sclerosis with involvement of the aortic valves. The aorta is dilated and covered with flat, fibrous thickenings of inflammatory processes causing marked scarring. Valve function is greatly impaired and immediately above them is the early stage of a saccular aneurysm. The condition is often fatal due to heart failure. Fatal aortic sclerosis can be caused by syphilis and is progressively malignant. From Bollinger, O. 1901 Atlas und Gundriss der Pathologischen Anatomie, vol 1. Lehmann, Munich.
