A 19th Century illustration of visitors to Clonmacnoise, a monastery in County Offaly, Ireland founded on the River Shannon in 544 by St. Ciarán. It became a centre of culture growth until Ireland's move from a monastic framework to a diocesan one in the twelfth century diminished the site's religious standing. In 1552 the English garrison at Athlone destroyed and looted Clonmacnoise for the final time, leaving it in ruins.
