After the wound heals, anartificial shell may be inserted over the stump. Enucleation or excision of the eyeball.—The eyelids are separated with aspeculum, and the ocular conjunctiva is divided close to and entirely around thecornea. The conjunctiva and capsule of Tenon are pushed backward over theeye. The rectus muscles are grasped with forceps at their insertions and dividedback of the forceps. The globe is drawn forward and inward, and the opticnerve and adjoining structures are divided with scissors along the outer side of theeyeball. The eye is then drawn out of its socket, and the remaining adherenttendons and other structures are severed. The cavity is irrigated with cold sterilewater, and the stumps of the rectus muscle are sutured together. The wound iscleansed, and a sterilized dressing applied. PLATE CCXLIX. The organ of hearing consists of three portions—the external, middle, andinternal ear. The External Ear comprises the auricle or pinna and the meatusauditorius externus; the former is of but slight imjjortance ph3^siologically; thelatter is the canal which leads inward to the tympanic membrane. The MiddleEar is composed of the tympanum, the mastoid antrum, and the mastoid tympanum, an air chamber, communicates with the naso-pharj-nx by meansof the Eustachian tube, and contains a chain of movable bones—the auditoryossicles. The mastoid antrum and mastoid cells are air chambers accessory tothe tympanum. The Internal Ear, or Labyrinth, is made up of a complexarrangement of cavities; it contains a fluid,—the perilymph,—together Avith amembranous cast of the bony structures known as the membranous labjrinth ;the latter
