Scenedesmus acuminatus. Polarised light micrograph of the green alga Scenedesmus acuminatus. This colonial species often forms small chains of four cells, rather than long filaments. Small vacuoles filled with oil at either end of each cell enables them to float in the water, maximizing their exposure to sunlight.
