Guard Hut, Birch Tree Meadow.
This area of Auschwitz II (main concentration camp) is what encouraged me to visit, to witness this evil and barbaric place. When I watched my first documentary on the camp I can remember seeing this guard hut, the fences, the sewage works to the right, and one of the main gas chambers to the left. I remember watching young children, mothers, fathers, uncles, brothers; innocents sitting in the sun, under the trees. All seemed calm, there was smoke about 100 meters away to the left. But apart from that, all seemed calm. Those innocents were one of many thousands of transports immediately selected for extermination. They would not have any work detail; nor did they know. They would have endured a horrific journey across Europe. Some would have died on the way. They would have been calmly told to vacate the train. Then sit among the trees (ready for their so called disinfecting shower). Thirty minutes later, they were dead. If all the trees could talk in this area the tales they could tell us would be brutal. None of the POW's that had work detail were allowed into this area of the camp; only that of Sonderkommando; and even they were killed every 4-6 months and replaced. Replaced so not to tell the world of Hitlers secret.
