Laminectomy for spinal stenosis. Coloured frontal and profile X-rays of the lower spine of a 64- year-old woman after a laminectomy to treat lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS). LSS is a condition where the spinal canal in the vertebrae of the lower (lumbar) part of the spine narrows and compresses the spinal cord. This causes extreme pain in the lower back and legs, which is worsened by walking. A laminectomy is a surgical treatment that relieves the pressure exerted by the spinal canal by trimming or removing the lamina (the regions of the vertebrae that form the spinal canal) from each affected vertebra, widening the spinal canal.
