Light microscopy of large intestine glands showing many goblet cells secreting mucus (stained red) into the intestinal lumen. Intestinal glands also have epithelial cells (blue-stained) that chiefly absorb fluids in the large bowel and similarly in the small bowel serve to absorb nutrients from the diet. Mucoid secretions in the large bowel function to coat and lubricate waste products (fecal material). Magnification x170 when height printed at 10 cm.
