This national monument, named in honor of the distinguishedarchaeologist, the late Adolph Francis Alphonse Bandelier (1840- ___!^! T. 18 N. T. 17 N. Bandelier National Monument within the Santa Fe National Forest, N. Mex., created February 11,1916. 1914), was created by proclamation dated February 11, 1916, andembraces approximately 22,075 acres of land within the Santa FeNational Forest, N. Mex. The nearest town is Buckman, on theDenver & Rio Grande Railroad, 18 miles from Santa Fe, N. Mex. Themonument can readily be reached by automobile from Santa Fe,while a wagon road leads to it from Buckman. 52 Throughout the entire area prehistoric ruins of all kinds occur invast numbers. On the sides 01 many of the canyons are found cliffdwellings, carved out of the soft tufa cliffs, and upon the mesa topsand in the valleys are numerous ruins of the many chambered com-munity houses or pueblos, ranging from those of one or two rooms tolarge pueblos having over a hundred rooms.
