Sooner or latersuch hernise are pretty sure tobecome strangulated, and the stran-gulation may lead to a fatal re-sult before an operation can beperformed. Incarceration or persistence ofthe contents in the hernial sac, dullpain in the region of the hernia in-creasing with exertion, or gradualenlargement of the sac, are signsdemanding opei-ation, unless such contra-indications as grave cardiac lesion, advanced nephritis, asthma, or great obesity exist.
