His patriotism and service to both his country and his community has been the backbone to his service even when faced with uncertainty. “My love of country comes from my love of history,” said Spahn, “ I have learned a lot about the meaning of freedom both foreign and domestic. That’s a big reason why I decided I wanted to join the National Guard, to protect people here and make sure they are safe in moments like these when they are faced with natural disasters.” Spahn is currently a member of the Florida National Guard's Chemical, Biological, Radiological/Nuclear, and Explosive (CBRNE) - Enhanced Response Force Package (FL-CERFP). This quick response team is capable of providing search and rescue capabilities across the state with the use of maritime and ground assets. As a hurricane is predicted to be near, FL-CERFP members mobilize towards the highest potential impact areas. “I keep general population safety in mind during moments like hurricane activation,” said Spahn. “ The outcomes of a storm can be unpredictable and the general public can often not be prepared for that. I have some friends that weren't able to evacuate in a short amount of time. People just need help in general and that's why we are out here doing what we need to do.”
