After tsunami. Image 2 of 2. Ikonos satellite image of an industrial port, south of Banda Aceh, Aceh province, Sumatra, Indonesia. This image was taken on 29 December 2004. On 26 December 2004 there was an underwater earthquake, the largest for 40 years, between the Eurasian and Australian plates off the coast of Indonesia. Shockwaves from this created huge waves, or tsunamis, which devastated surrounding coastlines. A stretch of forest and vegetation has been lost along the coast, and a road leading from the industrial plant is damaged. The death toll in Indonesia alone is in excess of 100,000.
