In the western portion of the area, however, a somewhat different pattern seems to emerge. Here, centered in the area north and west of Mesa Redonda, near the modern town of Snowflake, cultural remains reflect difl^erences in the ceramics as well as major differences in ceremonial architecture compared to those found in the Little Colorado Ri\cr \'alley. Circular Great Kivas make their appearance in this locale—the only time and place in the entire surveyed area with one exception. A circular Great Kiva was excavated by the Museum at the Mineral Creek Site in 1959 (Martin, Rinaldo, and Longacre, 1961). The circular Great Kivas located near Snowflake are associated with large pueblo villages, just as.
