The Holy Trinity, with God the Father enthroned, the crucified Christ and the dove of the Holy Spirit: late 1400s Renaissance fresco by the Lombardic itinerant artist Cristoforo I Baschenis on the west front of the Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate or Church of St Anthony the Abbot at Pelugo, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy.

Pelugo, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy: the Trinity, with God the Father enthroned, the crucified Christ and the dove of the Holy Spirit, painted in the late 1400s by an itinerant Lombardic artist on the west front of the Chiesa di Sant’Antonio Abate or Church of Saint Anthony the Abbot. This Renaissance Trinitarian fresco, its lower area faded by centuries of sun and rain, is by Cristoforo I Baschenis, a member of a travelling family of painters based at Averara, near Bergamo, who decorated dozens of churches throughout Trentino with biblical frescoes. Cristoforo was also responsible for the fresco of St Anthony the Abbot, signed and dated 1474, above the church’s Gothic portal, as well as other external paintings. Other Baschenis family artists who contributed at different times to the exterior and interior frescoes at Pelugo included Cristoforo’s brother, Simone, and Dionisio or Dionysius Baschenis, who in 1493 signed and dated a giant figure to the right of the portal of St Christopher fording a river with the Christ Child on his shoulder. The early-15th century village church at Pelugo and the Chiesa di San Viglio at Pinzolo, which displays a dramatic external ‘Dance of Death’, are the best-known churches frescoed by the Baschenis painters in the scenic Val Rendena and its surrounding countryside. Nomadic artisans like the Baschenis family used to travel all over the alpine region, selling their skills wherever they were required and working mostly at small churches in isolated mountain villages. They painted popular images rather than fine art, but their works successfully communicated the Christian message and Bible stories to the villagers.
