It would be impertinent to say, or imply, that there is noreason for this, or for any other opinion adopted by learnedand impartial men, after careful examination; but their ar-guments do not for a moment disturb my settled convictionthat It was a gourd. The cause of their mistake may prob-ably be found in the fact that, in these modern Shemiti^-dialects, the word kurah—gourd—closely resembles, bothm form and sound, khurwah—castor-bean—just as the kikicm—gourd—of Jonah resembles the Egyjito-Greek /LvX-?—cas-tor-bean—according to Dioscorides. These accidental re-semblances may have led Jerome and others into the opin-ion that they were the same plant.
