The diet wasmade up of the four estates (the Nobility, the Clergy, theBurgesses and the Peasantry), giving the people an opportunityto participate in the government of the whole country. It wassummoned by royal authority as circumstances required and asquestions of great import arose, and the members were electedor appointed to represent the various districts of the kingdom.^*^ The Council of State became an important body during thisperiod.
