The remains of the more recent Cathedral andAbbey are very interesting, containing some finespecimens of architecture, and several curious monu-ments. Some of these last have been removed intothe adjoining Protestant church. The Round Tower is situated close to the church,amid the graves. It is in perfect repair excepton the summit, where the original conical top hasbeen removed, probably by accident, and a sort ofparapet or battlement put in its place. This toweris one of the largest in Ireland: Grose says it is132, Ledwich 110 feet in height, the last being, nodoubt, the best authority. We found its externalcircumference, by our rude measurement, to beabout 54 feet. It has a fine ornamented doorwayabout 14 feet from the ground.
