Frederick Remington drew these two Turcos-Algerian recruits from French territories who served in the French army.

This illustration was drawn by American sculptor Frederick Remington. It shows two Turcos, the nickname given to Algerian recruits from French territories who served in the French army. The Turcos were known as excellent sharpshooters. This image accompanied an article titled "French Fighters in Africa" by Poultney Bigelow that appeared in Harper's New Monthly Magazine in February 1895. Remington served as a journal correspondent in Algiers in the early 1890s.
