LDL cholesterol can build up on the sides of blood vessels along with cell debris, calcium and fibrous connective tissue to form an atheroma (yellow deposit). This narrows the blood vessels (stenosis), which raises blood pressure and puts strain on the heart. A group of drugs called statins can be taken to lower LDL-cholesterol.
