North Carolina, in 1833, andwas reared upon an old-time plantation with its manyslaves to perform the heavy duties of both field andhousehold. William J. Webster was a mechanic, a manof active mentality, had a fair training in the localschools, and developed his special bent by work as car-penter before the war.
