This is a handsome stove evergreen sbrub, about three feet high, from Sierra Leone, liaviiig white starry, fragrant flowers, mth long tubes, as expressed by its names, Oxij- anlliiis being derived from oxtjs, sharp, and anthiis, a flower, referring to the sharp-pointed or starry divisions of both tlie flower and flower-cup, alias calyx. It is figured in Jiidrews's Botaniad Reports as Gardenia tiibijlora.* Tlie genus consists of plants having flowers more or less tubular, but there is a marked difterence in the extraordinai-y length of the tube in the j)resent species, which justifies the ap- plication of the specific name, itibiflnriis.
