Probus A Tetradrachma of Probus, emperor 276 -282 AD. Minted in Alexandria in 278-279 of the eastern, Greek influenced provinces were allowed to mint their own currency based on the Greek drachma, this is made from a metal alloy known as potin. Probus, another military man was emperor at a time when the empire was falling succession of short lived emperors, rampant inflation and constant attack on it's frontiers had left the empire tottering. Probus spent his entire reign fighting off internal challengers and barbarians all over the empire. He kept the barbarians at bay but didn't achieve much to halt the decline. He was inevitably overthrown and killed by one of his generals, the fact he survived for 6 years at this time though is some sort of achievement. The obverse has Probus' portrait and a Greek legend A K M AVP ?PO-BOC CEB. The reverse has an eagle with a wreath in it's beak. The Greek letters L indicate year 4 of his reign.
