William Harvey and Charles I. 1854 illustration of the English physician William Harvey (1578-1657) explaining the human circulatory system to King Charles I of England (1600-1649). Harvey was the first person to accurately determine how the heart circulated blood throughout human and animal bodies and was also the first to posit the theory that humans and other mammals reproduced when an egg was fertilised by sperm.
