Photograph by David Coleman. The United States Marine Drum and Bugle Corps, affectionately known as "The Commandant's Own," is a prestigious musical unit within the Marine Corps. Established in 1934, this elite group performs at various official and ceremonial functions, with the Sunset Parade being one of its most notable public appearances. The Sunset Parade is a weekly summer tradition held at the Marine Corps War Memorial, also known as the Iwo Jima Memorial. This memorial, dedicated in 1954, depicts the famous flag-raising on Iwo Jima during World War II, based on Joe Rosenthal's Pulitzer Prize-winning photograph. The bronze statue, created by Felix de Weldon, stands 32 feet tall on a granite base, making it one of the world's largest bronze statues. The parade typically includes a one-hour performance featuring the precision drill of the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon and the musical artistry of "The Commandant's Own." Set against the backdrop of the Washington, skyline, the event combines stirring music, military precision, and patriotic symbolism. The location, adjacent to Arlington National Cemetery, adds to the solemnity and significance of the performance, honoring the sacrifices of service members past and present.
