Jupiter and Earth compared. Computer artwork comparing the size of the gas giant Jupiter (left) with that of the Earth (right). Jupiter's diameter is over ten times greater than Earth's, it has over 300 times the mass and is the fifth planet from the sun, being over five times further from it than the Earth. Jupiter is so large that its famous Great Red Spot (lower right, a giant hurricane-like storm that is at least 400 years old) would easily swallow the Earth. Jupiter is an oblate spheroid in shape as it spins so fast on its axis that it bulges noticeably at its equator.
