The Cathedral began as a monastery in AD 673 founded by St Etheldreda. The Danes destroyed it but work on the present Cathedral began in the 11th century under the leadership of Abbot Simeon. The monastic church became a cathedral in 1109 with the Diocese of Ely being carved out of the Diocese of Lincoln. The central Norman tower fell in 1322 but Alan of Walsingham rebuilt it in the design of the Octagon with it's jewel-like Lantern. In the 15th Century the North West Transept collapsed giving the Cathedral it's distinctive, lop-sided appearance. The Cathedral has undergone many restorations, but a major transformation was credited to Dean George Peacock in the 19th Century. Much of the colour seen today in the Cathedral interior, the painted ceiling, marble floors and stained glass are the result of work completed during the Victorian restoration. The 20th Century saw further necessary repairs and modernisation with this work completed in time for the new millenium.
