Subcutaneous introduction BACILLUS TETANI 149 is followed in the latter by the formation of false membranes onthe site of inoculation, an extensive ha^morrhagic oedema in thesurrounding tissue, and not infrequently pleurisy and lobular pneu-monia. Here also, however, the bacilli are present only in thefalse membrane. Transmission to a loounded mucous membrane gives rise to aprocess accompanied by the formation of false membranes andresembling human diphtheria, and even paralytic conditions mayfollow the introduction of cultures, or of the products of culturesfreed from l^acteria by filtration.
