It was then the manse of John Despanyding, a canon of theCathedral. This is ascertained from the Rolls of Parliament,1., 469, whereis recorded a petition written in Norman-French, with the reply to it inLatin. The translations read :— To our Lord the King—prays hishost of Elgin, John Despanyding, by the Grace of God, Canon ofElgin, that he would please to give twenty oaks in his forest of Lang-morn to repair his church of Duffus, of which he is canon.
