James Chadwick & Piotr Kapista. View of James Chadwick (right, 1891-1974) and his best man Piotr Kapista (1894-1984). Chadwick worked under Rutherford on the bombardment of elements with alpha particles. In 1932, he reinterpreted experiments by Bothe & Joliot-Curie and discovered the neutron. He won the 1935 physics Nobel Prize for this work. The neutron proved to be the most useful particle for initiating nuclear reactions. Kapista worked under Rutherford after coming to the UK from the USSR in 1921. He specialised in low temperature physics. He returned to the USSR in 1934 and continued his research. In 1978 he won the Nobel physics prize.
