The topics covered should be related to the intent of the respective course in that they should be based on the overall objectives for that program. Elective topics may be implemented on a periodic basis. The use of electives should be directed toward a greater understand- ing of the scientific method through the development of laboratory and library research skills. Electives may be pursued utilizing several instructional strategies ranging from individual to group work and from structured to open-ended investigations. Electives should be designed to make science more interesting and meaningful through the assimilation of current issues and applications of biology. The elective section of the biology program may be approached in several ways: 1. As an extension of concepts related to core This is not meant to be an in-depth study of core material, but rather an opportunity to apply and extend core principles to contemporary issues and topics. Some examples are the study of parasitology, contemporary diseases, genetic engineering, nutritional patterns, chemical health hazards, cardiopulmonary resuscitation, influence of the development of the microscope on society, and dichotomous keys. 58 -.
