His first four years of teaching were spent in the HighSchools of Castine, Ellsworth and Cherryfield, Maine. In orderto pursue his favorite study — Chemistry — to better advantage,he returned to Massachusetts and became principal of our HighSchool, a position he occupied for six years, until his death, June22, 1881. He was of a retiring disposition and won regard notby any self-assertion, but by his moral worth, scholarly attain-ments, and steady devotion to duty. ^- H. G. 12. I ^ FREDERIC L. OWEN, Frederic L. Owen, Jr., , was born at Hanover, N. H.,and fitted for college at Kimball Union Academy, Meriden,N. H.; entered Dartmouth College in 1873, and graduated in1877. After graduation he taught at Dennis (on Cape Cod),Mass., until the winter of 1878, when he went to Canton asprincipal of the Crane School. In the spring of 1881 hewent to Franklin halls, N. H., to take charge of the HighSchool in that town, but a vacancy occurring in the CantonHigh School at the time, occasioned by the resignation ofMr. Berry, he was immediately called to that position. He was principal of the High School for nearly nine years,until June, 1889. Since that time he has been sub-master inthe Shcrwin School, Boston, where he is at the present time.
