George Lance was sent to Leeds to be a manufacturer, but on his own urgententreaty, was allowed to give up the attempt, and going to London he became apupil of Haydons. Mr. Redgrave tells the story that Lance had visited the BritishMuseum, and, seeing a lad drawing from the Elgin marbles, with the words writtenon his copy Pupil of Haydon, inquired eagerly whether Haydon would take otherpupils. He was conducted by the lad, a brother of Sir Edwin Landseers, to the *See Steel Engraving,. COLLINS. I79 painter. On the new comers making a modest statement of his wish, with a hesita-ting inquiry as to terms, Haydon, with the impulsiveness—half generosity, halfbluster, which was so much a part of him, exclaimed—Terms, my little fellow!when I take pupils I never look at the fathers purses. Bring me some of yourwork, and if I think they promise success I will take you for nothing. Haydon did become the master of Lance, and in Haydons studio, and as astudent of the Royal Academy, he learnt what could be learnt of art. But the highart which Haydon taught was not congenial to his young pupil, and by a happyaccident he found a more suitable field for his gift. Having been sent to paint somestill life to improve his skill, the work was admired and bought by Sir George Beau-mont, and commissions for the same description of work followed from the Earl ofShaftesbury and the Duke of Bedford.
