Measles rash. View of the chest of an adult male patient suffering from measles. Measles (medical names: rubeola, morbilli) is a highly infectious viral disease that mainly affects young children. When contracted in adulthood, the symptoms tend to be more severe. Symptoms of cold and fever develop after an incubation period of 8-15 days. On the 3rd to 5th day the characteristic blotchy rash develops (as seen here) and persists for 3 to 5 days. The patient remains infectious throughout this period. Complications may include ear and chest infections, and rarely encephalitis. Complete recovery may take 2-4 weeks. Vaccination provides effective immunity against the disease.
