In December,1889, a number of contracts were let for the clear-ing and grading of fifteen miles immediately southof the Skagit river and thirty miles north of two thousand men were put to work onthese sections. Another railroad that was quite active in theSkagit valley at this time was the Fairhaven &Southern. There was considerable rivalry betweenthis road and the Seattle & Northern, also the Seat-tle, Lake Shore & Eastern or West Coast, as thisbranch of it was generally designated.
