Anthracite coal is scarce and prices are higher than at any time since the great coal strike, some thirteen years ago. If there is no improvement in prices, quite a number of growers will close down their houses rather than operate at a loss. Those who have available tillable land are breaking up much of it. One florist will plant twenty acres to root crops and it is hoped all others will do what they can. Others are planning to grow more vegetables than in the past under glass, prices on all of these being exceptionally high. The country-wide campaign for in- creased food production is affecting every community here. Sunday, April 22, plows and harrows could be seen at work in all directions, breaking up and pulverizing land, an unusual sight in the Old Bay state. Community gardens and school gardens are being greatly extended and the net result should be of great horticultural as well as economic benefit. Flower production on private estates is being heavily reduced. This again should, in some measure, benefit commercial growers. Wax Bros, report a good volume of business, with more weddings than usual at this season. The veteran Nathan Wax enjoys excellent health. N. E. Boyle
