This 1870s illustration shows how Newcomen's Steam Engine worked. English inventor Thomas Newcomen (1664-1729) invented the first practical steam engine in 1712. His atmospheric engine, the first practically useful engine in which a piston moving in a cylinder was employed. The letters correspond accordingly: c (cylinder), h (piston), d and e and f (pipes), k (cock), m (pump rod), g (cistern), d(opening to cylinder).
