Vibrio cholerae bacterium. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a Vibrio cholerae bacterium, cause of cholera (infection of the small intestine). This gram-negative bacterium has a single polar strand or flagellum (purple), which it uses to moves. It is a water-borne pathogen and is transmitted to humans in contaminated water and food. It produces a toxin that causes diarrhoea and extreme dehydration, which may be fatal if untreated. Outbreaks are associated with poor sanitary conditions and are often epidemic.
