Artist's depiction of an agoraphobic woman at a window. Agoraphobia is a morbid fear of public places or open spaces. It is a condition which often overlaps with claustrophobia (fear of enclosed spaces). Sufferers of agoraphobia dread the outdoors and mixing with other people, and make up any number of excuses to remain at home. When venturing out, they may experience panic which leads to a further restriction of activities. Agoraphobics may become completely housebound. It is the most common phobia for which psychiatric help is sought. Treatment may include behavioural therapy (which has a high success rate); anti-depressant drugs may be needed.
