Blue Pillar or Post box or letter box, Liverpool Road, Manchester, England, UK

This postbox, which is in use, is next to the Museum of Science & Industry in Liverpool Road. It is painted a pale shade of blue, instead of the usual red. It dates from the reign of King George V (1910-1936). In the 1930's, for a few years, special airmail boxes in blue were placed at important sites, but as air services expanded rapidly, special boxes were no longer required. This one was painted blue in 1983, to commemorate the association of the Post Office (now a separate entity from Royal Mail) with British aviation.
