He returned to England and obtained his commission in the York and Lancaster Regiment in 1914. Lt Col Leahy served in Gallipoli and in Egypt, before being posted to the Western Front where he was Mentioned in Despatches. He was killed by a shell, aged 35, while directing his men during a raid on German trenches on 17 July 1918. Lt Col Leahy is buried at Mazingarbe Communal Cemetery Extension.
