The Cattaraugus reservation is partly in the county of the same name, butprincipally in Erie county north of the Cattaraugus creek. The Allegany res-ervation is wholly within Cattaraugus county and is forty miles long, by aboutone mile wide. Not far from one thousand Indians, principally Senecas, occupy? this reservation. There are about fifteen hundred Indians on the Cattarau-gus reservation, and they, with the Indians of the Allegany reservation, con-stitute one nation, hence the division of officers between the two population on both these reservations is increasing. The births exceededthe deaths by thirteen in 1891. Within the bounds of the Allegany reserva-tion there are 30,469 acres of land, not all fit for cultivation. The good tim-ber is gone for the rriost part, and many of the Indians-are compelled eitherto work for others for wages, or to till the soil, or Eaklv Indian Occupancy, Etc. Cattaraugus county is peopled by whites who are deeply interested ineducation, and a strong sentiment in its favor prevails. It is doubtful if anycounty in the State has better public schools, and this sentiment in favor ofeducation has exerted its wholesome influence on the Indians, awakeningamong many of them a like interest. There are several State public schoolson the reservations in Cattaraugus county, and in addition to these there is aprosperous industrial school at Quaker Bridge, sustained by the Society ofFriends. This school accommodates about forty children of both sexes, andfurnishes instruction to the boys in farming, and the girls in housework, inaddition to a good course of study.* Other religious bodies exert no smallinfluence on behalf of education throughout this county, among which shouldbe mentioned the Baptists, Presbyterians and Methodists.
