Choosing civil engineer-ing as his profession, he graduatedwith distinction in 1827; but onreaching Charleston, S. C, hismother entreated him to choose aprofession that would not takehim so far from home. This wasa great disappointment to bothhim and Captain Partridge, whohad secured a fine situation forhim in the West, and was feelinga keen interest in the success ofhis promising pupil; but the. Dr. Morton Waring. young man with characteristic unselfishness yielded to his mothers wish,though he always felt it one of the greatest disappointments of his life. He then decided to study medicine at the Medical College in graduated with distinction in 1830. The same year, he began to practice 250 NORWICH UNIVERSITY. in St. Johns, Berkeley, where he was most successful. He was respectedand beloved in his community for his great benevolence and force of he was a member of no church, he was most active in all church work,and was always a member of the vestry of the Episcopal church. He was alsoan extensive and successful cotton and rice planter until the emancipation in1865. He never planted after the close of the war. He moved to Florence,S. C, in October, 1869, and soon had a large medical practice,, which he con-tinued to follow until his death. He was married December 25, 1830, to Anne Henrietta, daughter ofNathaniel Henry Rhodes, M.
