Lavenham, Suffolk, England, United Kingdom: the inn sign of the Angel Hotel hanging in the Market Place of this former wealthy wool town features an angelic musician with gilded hair and wings holding a three-stringed rebec, an instrument with Middle Eastern and Persian origins popular in Western Europe from the 13th to the 16th centuries. The Angel Hotel was first licensed in 1420 and is believed to be Lavenham’s oldest inn. It was chiefly formed from a 15th century timber-framed and plastered building, although 14th century interior wall paintings show earlier origins. Other historic features include a 16th century plaster ceiling on the upper storey. The Angel was owned and run for several years by the British chef, restauranteur and television personality, Marco Pierre White.
