The Soviet War Memorial, erected in 1945, west of the Reichstag Building, commemorates the Soviet war dead, particularly the 80,000 killed in the Battle of Berlin, April and May 1945, Located in the post-war British Sector, it was supported by all Allied powers. A curved stoa, topped by a large statue of a Soviet soldier, is flanked by two Red Army ML-20 152 mm howitzer-gun artillery pieces (seen here) and two T-34 tanks (1 seen right background). The Cyrillic inscription below the statue reads: 'Eternal glory to the heroes who fell in battle with the German fascist invaders for the freedom and independence of the Soviet Union'. The soldier's arm is in a position symbolising the Red Army's putting down of Nazi Germany. The memorial was designed by Mikhail Gorrits and the soldier by sculptors Vladimir Tsigal and Lev Kerbel. 2000 fallen Soviet soldiers are buried at the site.
