Antibiotic crystals. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of crystals of the antibiotic ciprofloxacin, a broad-spectrum antibiotic of the fluoroquinolone class. Ciprofloxacin is used mainly to treat infections of the gastrointestinal and genitourinary tract, as well as respiratory tract infections. It is also active against typhoid fever, some sexually transmitted diseases, infectious diarrhoea, septicaemia, and inhalational anthrax, and is used also as an antineoplastic agent. Magnification: x4000 when printed at 10cm wide.
