Newark Newark Castle on the River Trent Nottinghamshire Built by Alexander the Magnificent Bishop of Lincoln in 1130 Only 20 of this castle remains the rest having been demolished after the English Civil War Fortifications had been on the site since about 1068 Kin John died at the castle in 1216 The riverside curtain wall that still stands was built on the 14th Century Newark was held by the Royalists all through the Civil War and the ruined castle was the first monument to be restored at government expense in 1845 8
