Oath of the Horatii

According to Roman legend, in the early 600s , the Romans were at war with the neighboring Albans. Rather than fight more and incur a greater loss of life, it was decided to have a single combat decide the war's victor. The Horatii triplets, pictured here, volunteered to defend the Roman cause against the Alban Curiatii triplets. The Horatii won: actually two died and the third defeated the three Curiatii.
