Borgholm castle, a top rated attraction and world class tourist destination in Sweden
Borgholm Castle on the island of Öland rises high on a plateau overlooking Kalmarsund and Borgholm harbour. The now magnificent ruin was once a Baroque palace. The royal fortress in Borgholm was one of Sweden's most important defences, which throughout the Middle Ages and up until the seventeenth century repeatedly suffered battles and sieges, destruction and rebuilding work. The fortress has been held by Swedes, Danes and Germans and has seen kings hold court in its halls.
