More than 170 Maliks, or village elders, met for the traditional Afghan council hosted by the Afghan Border Police’s 6th Kandak. The jirga was an oportunity for the Maliks to voice security, education and corruption concerns. The Shinwari sub-tribes committed to working with security forces by signing an anti-Taliban Shinwari Pact. The jirga, according to television and radio reports, sent a powerful and irrefutable message of tribal solidarity to the Taliban and those allowing corrupt governance. “I applaud you for [signing the agreement],” Simmons said. “We stand ready to fight to the end for peace and victory alongside you and our Afghan National Security Force brothers in arms.” (Photo by Army Sgt.
