B is the grips for B. MCss and MTss show where arevalues for maximum compression and tensionstresses. Incidentally, the writer may men-tion that he has long held the opin-ion that the ordinary tensile testingmachine is too cumbersome and ex-pensive for the work which it iscalled upon to perform. He wasonce struck most favourably (at first)with the idea of rigidly securing the tension specimen at one end to arotary shaft and at the other end toa weight. The stress would then beapplied by centrifugal force. Bygradually speeding up the shaft thestress could be increased until thematerial ruptured—when stops wouldprevent the weight and the piece ofthe broken specimen secured to itfrom flying into space! But a fewcalculations as to the effect of wind-age on the power needed was suffi-cient to make him give up that yet there sure must be someeasier method of applying the force
