Flightless cormorant. View of a flightless cormorant (Phalacrocorax or Nannopterum harrisi) drying its small wings. Flightless cormorants have much smaller wings than other cormorants of the same size. They are good swimmers, and eat fish which they catch in underwater chases. Their feathers are not fully waterproof, allowing them to dive with reduced buoyancy. This means, however, that the cormorant has to dry its feathers once it returns to land. Cormorants are often seen holding their wings open to dry after diving, although it looks somewhat bizarre with wings this small. Photographed in the Galapagos Islands, the flightless cormorants' sole habitat.
